Porsche and Michelin have unveiled a groundbreaking new tyre designed to enhance the 911 GT3 RS’s performance, especially in challenging wet conditions. The Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 (PSS5) promises not only improved durability for track days but also significant speed gains—up to 10 seconds faster on a wet lap. In fact, this improvement is so dramatic it could easily place the car in a higher motorsport category.
The PSS5 tyre has been rigorously developed to excel in less-than-ideal conditions, such as wet and freezing tracks—perfect for environments like the UK’s unpredictable weather. Porsche’s GT division leader, Andreas Preuninger, noted that the tyre was designed in response to performance enthusiasts’ demands to extend the GT3 RS’s track-ready capabilities throughout more of the year, particularly in spring and autumn.
This new tyre allows owners to explore the full potential of their GT3 RS, even in adverse weather. Porsche and Michelin worked closely with legendary driver Jörg Bergmeister to fine-tune the PSS5’s ability to resist aquaplaning. This means the tyre can maintain grip for longer, even as it gets pushed to its limits. It features a deeper tread, specialized grooves, and an advanced rubber-silica compound that ensures quicker heating and longer-lasting performance.
The PSS5’s wet-weather capabilities were tested at the Michelin Development Centre on the challenging 2.8km ‘3bis’ circuit, where lap times with the 911 GT3 RS were more than 10 seconds faster than those achieved with the previous Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 NO tyres. The result? A faster, safer, and more thrilling driving experience.
