Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier extended his lead in Rally Australia, tenth round of the World Rally Championship, on the second day as a wrong tyre choice by his teammate Jari-Matti Latvala put the Finn on the back foot.
Ogier went into Saturday with a 0.4 second lead, but he dropped to second place overall when Latvala set the quickest times in the opening two stages (SS9 and SS10). However, Latvala lost out to Ogier in the day’s four remaining stages and the pair are now separated by almost 12 seconds at the end of SS14.
The battle for third place had been an intense one between Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen and Citroen’s Kris Meeke, with the pair continuously trading positions, but it was the latter who eventually took it at the end of the day. They are now just 1.5 seconds apart.
