Renault R17 Concept: Electric Restomod with Retro Appeal

Renault’s stunning R17 electric restomod blends modern tech with 1970s design, offering 270 horsepower and 249 miles of range, though it won’t enter production.

Renault has unveiled the R17, a retro-inspired concept car that masterfully revives the brand’s 1970s design with a modern electric twist. Although stunning, Renault has no plans to bring this 270-horsepower electric restomod to production, much to the disappointment of enthusiasts.

The R17, designed in collaboration with French designer Ora Ïto, pays homage to the original Renault 17, which was sold from 1971 to 1979. The concept features a carbon body with sleek, balanced proportions, and design elements like rectangular LED headlights and a full-width LED taillight bar that capture the essence of the original. Flared fenders and subtle louvers add a sporty edge, while the interior blends retro fabrics and materials with modern technology. Four rectangular screens are discreetly integrated into the cabin, and the central display sits horizontally beneath the dash, reminiscent of an old-school radio.

Powered by a 270-hp electric motor, the R17 can travel 249 miles on a single charge. However, Renault intends for this beautiful concept to remain a one-off showpiece, with appearances at events like the 2024 Paris Motor Show. Fans can still hope that Renault might follow the path of other brands, like Hyundai, which reversed its decision on the N Vision 74 concept, and perhaps bring the R17 to life.
