Rolls-Royce’s bespoke Phantom Dragon features intricate dragon artwork, Chinese cultural symbols, and exquisite craftsmanship in every detail.
Rolls-Royce has crafted a truly exceptional one-off Phantom, the Phantom Dragon, blending art, culture, and luxury in a breathtaking homage to Chinese mythology. On the outside, it maintains the elegant understatement typical of the Phantom 8, but inside, it showcases an unparalleled design inspired by ancient Chinese legends and the mystical power of dragons.
The bespoke craftsmanship of the Phantom Dragon pays tribute to one of China’s most revered symbols — the dragon — through intricate woodwork and detailing. The cabin features a stunning array of 297 individual pieces from four distinct wood species: smoked eucalyptus, sycamore, ash, and black bolivar. These elements form a marquetry masterpiece, where two dragons appear to swirl around the centerpiece clock, seemingly guarding it. The clock itself is adorned with a pearl, adding an extra touch of opulence.
The dragon theme extends beyond the woodwork to the car’s starlight headliner, which is embedded with over 1,300 fiber-optic lights. The headrests are embroidered in luxurious red leather, representing the luckiest color in Chinese culture, with the customer’s family name carefully stitched in. Each detail of the car is meticulously crafted to honor both the client’s personal symbolism and the cultural significance of the dragon.
Lead designer Shuai Feng shared that the goal of the Phantom Dragon project was to convey China’s most cherished symbols while maintaining Rolls-Royce’s design ethos. The dragon motif is inspired by an ancient Chinese tale in which two dragons, protectors of humanity, were gifted a pearl by the gods. Instead of fighting over it, the dragons shared the pearl, a story of generosity and loyalty that remains central to the design. The Phantom 8 itself was chosen for this project as the number eight holds special significance in Chinese culture, symbolizing infinity and bringing good luck.
