Co-driver Dies in Jim Clark Rally Crash
Tragic Accident on Stage Eight
The British rally community was rocked on Saturday, May 24, 2025, as a fatal accident occurred during the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders. Co-driver Dai Roberts, aged 39, tragically lost his life during the eighth special stage of the event near Duns.

Driver James Williams Injured
Roberts was co-driving for James Williams, who was behind the wheel of a Hyundai i20 N Rally2. Williams sustained injuries in the crash and was immediately transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. According to event organizers and Police Scotland, his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

Event Halted Immediately
The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 AM on the Edrom Mains road, prompting the cancellation of the remaining stages of the rally. Organizers also called off the Jim Clark Reivers Rally, which was scheduled to take place the following day.

Official Statement and Investigation
In a statement, Motorsport UK expressed its deep sorrow and condolences to the family and friends of Dai Roberts:

“Motorsport UK sends its condolences to Dai’s family and friends, the Jim Clark Rally, Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club and members of the motorsport community.”

A full investigation has been launched, with Motorsport UK working closely with the Jim Clark Rally organizers and the Jim Clark Memorial Motor Club, as well as the relevant authorities.

A Rally Family’s Second Tragedy
The loss of Dai Roberts has deeply impacted the rallying world, not only due to his contribution to the sport but also because of the heartbreaking family history. Roberts’ older brother, Gareth Roberts, also a co-driver, died in 2012 during the Targa Florio Rally in Italy. Gareth had been co-driving for Craig Breen, who himself tragically passed away in a crash while testing for the 2023 Rally Croatia.

Career and Legacy
Dai Roberts had a rich history in the sport. Aside from co-driving, he also competed as a driver in lower rally categories. In 2022, he and James Williams claimed victory in the British Asphalt Rally Championship, showcasing their strong partnership and competitive edge.

A Somber Moment for Rallying
This latest incident adds to the dark legacy of the Jim Clark Rally, which was also marred by tragedy in 2014, when three spectators lost their lives, leading to a suspension of the event until safety measures were improved.

The motorsport community mourns the passing of a respected and experienced co-driver. The thoughts of fans and fellow competitors are with Dai Roberts’ loved ones at this difficult time.
