Porsche Supercup championship leader Sean Edwards died in a car crash at the Queensland Raceway in Australia this morning. The Nurburgring and Dubai 24 Hours winner was a passenger in a Porsche 996 that hit the barriers in a private test session.
The 26-year-old died instantly on impact with the tyre wall on the outside of the track at Turn 6; it took local emergency services three hours to extract the driver – a 20-year-old man from Brisbane – from the burning wreckage. He is currently in intensive care with life-threatening injuries.
Other than his victories in Dubai and at the Nurburgring; Edwards enjoyed triumphs in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and in the GTC class of the American Le Mans Series; he also raced alongside Saudi driver Abdulaziz Al Faisal at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans.
