Sheikh Hassan of Qatar Makes Dramatic Return to Offshore Racing at Key West

DOHA (QATAR) – His Excellency Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani has announced a sensational comeback to international powerboat racing, ending an 11-year hiatus from the sport. The former Qatari offshore racing star, once a dominant force in the UIM Class One World Powerboat Championship and the American offshore circuit, will reunite with his legendary British throttleman, Steve Curtis MBE, for a high-profile return.

A Legendary Partnership Reunites

The duo, who last raced together in 2014, are preparing to compete at the prestigious 44th Annual Offshore World Championship in Key West, Florida, from November 2nd to 9th, 2025. Backed by Qatar’s Ministry of Sport and Youth, the team will resurrect the iconic Spirit of Qatar 96 racing name with a brand-new boat, competing in the elite Extreme class.

“Our last race together was in 2014, but we will be testing during the third week of October before heading to Key West,” said Sheikh Hassan.
“The goal, of course, will be the podium and to set plans in motion for the 2026 season. It will be a new boat for us to run together, but I am sure that Steve and I will settle in quickly.”

A Record-Breaking History

Sheikh Hassan and Curtis are no strangers to glory. One of the most memorable moments in their racing history came in 2014, when they smashed the water speed record at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri with a blistering run of 244 mph. Their return marks the rekindling of one of the sport’s most successful partnerships.
