March 30, 2015 – A spectator was killed in a terrifying crash during the first VLN endurance championship round on the Nürburgring Nordschleife this past Saturday.
The Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 driven by 2011 GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough went airborne at high speed, flew over the barriers and landed upside down in the spectator area, killing one man and injuring two more. The injured spectators were taken to the hospital for ongoing medical care and the race was stopped to give emergency crew quick access to the circuit, and wasn’t restarted.
A statement by Nissan said: “Today’s events have been a tragedy. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends.
