Stellantis’ STLA AutoDrive 1.0: Level 3 Self-Driving System

Stellantis has unveiled its new hands-free driving technology, STLA AutoDrive 1.0, which promises to offer autonomous capabilities up to 37 mph. While the system is fully developed, it is not yet available for consumers and will not be launched immediately.

STLA AutoDrive 1.0 is designed for urban commuters who frequently encounter dense, stop-and-go traffic. The system enables drivers to let go of the steering wheel and focus on other tasks like watching movies or checking emails, provided they’re driving under 37 mph. However, like other Level 3 autonomous systems, drivers must remain alert, as the vehicle may prompt them to take control at any time.

The system is built to operate in various conditions, including low-light and poor weather, making it suitable for a wide range of driving environments. When traffic conditions are appropriate, a message will notify the driver that AutoDrive is available. Once activated, the system can control steering, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, adjust speed, and manage braking.

Stellantis has also announced plans to further develop the system, with future upgrades aiming to increase the speed limit to 59 mph and introduce off-road capabilities. However, as stated by a Stellantis representative, the company has decided not to release the technology at this time due to the limited market for Level 3 autonomous driving.

“Our Level 3 technology is fully developed and ready for deployment, but the current market for autonomous driving at this level remains very limited,” a Stellantis spokesperson explained. “Once the market matures and conditions become more favorable, we will evaluate the path to commercialization.”
