Every year, the Geneva Motor Show has quite a handful of surprises, and 2014 wasn’t any different. From small exotic hatchbacks to brutal hypercars, the Geneva show had it all this year, and the time has come to pick out my 10 favorites.
10. Mazda Hazumi Concept
Featuring Mazda’s super attractive KODO design philosophy, the little Hazumi Concept seen in the picture above previews the next-generation Mazda 2. Fingers crossed the production version won’t look significantly different to this beauty.
09. BMW X4
Not exactly the best-looking or craziest car in the show, but the BMW X4 is a very important car for the German premium automaker and it will be a huge cash cow for BMW if it succeeds commercially. It’s certainly stylish and offers a wide variety of engines to satisfy a large chunck of consumers.
8. McLaren 650S
Although I’m not particularly keen about the P1 front fascia on the new 650S/650S Spider, the supercar does, however, look rather sexy. It is powered by an uprated twin-turbo V8 that pumps out a whopping 640 hp and 678 Nm of torque. Be afraid Ferrari, be very afraid.
7. Audi TT Quattro Sport Concept
Audi was on a roll in Geneva, unveiling the new TT, TTS and taking us by surprise with a stunning TT Quattro Sport Concept. This small sports car is home to a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 420 horsepower. Automakers have come a long way…
6. Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe
In the “Top 10 cars of 2013” article, I mentioned that the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a yacht on wheels. Well, you can now order that same yacht in coupe flavor thanks to the new S-Class Coupe. Just look at that thing, it’s achingly gorgeous! Only one engine has been announced so far, and it’s a twin-turbo V8 with 455 hp.
5. Maserati Alfieri Concept
Definitely one of the sexiest cars in Geneva was the new Alfieri Concept by Maserati. Italian designers never disappoint. The concept, created to celebrate Maserati’s 100th birthday, is based on the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale and hides a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine developing 460 hp and 520 Nm of torque under the bonnet. Do it Maserati, DO IT.
4. Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept
It has the 560 hp 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine found on the Nissan GT-R. It can, simply put, eat M3s and C63 AMGs for breakfast. Why isn’t this in production already?
03. Koenigsegg Agera One:1
And the wildest car award in Geneva goes to… the new Agera One:1 by Koenigsegg. It has 1340 horsepower, weighs 1340 kilograms and is described by Koenigsegg as the world’s first “megacar”. It sprints from 0 to 400 km/h in 20 seconds and tops out at 440 km/h. Are Bugatti’s days of reign finally over?
2. Honda Civic Type R Concept
Powered by a 280-horsepower turbocharged four-banger, the Civic Type R Concept provides us with the clearest look yet at the new hot-hatch ahead of its global launch next year. Honda aims big with the Civic Type R as it plans to break the Nurburgring front-wheel drive lap time record with it.
1. Lamborghini Huracan
Replacing Lamborghini’s most successful model to date (Gallardo), the new Huracan has some pretty big shoes to fill. However, with sublime looks and typical Lamborghini levels of performance (610 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque from a 5.2-liter N/A V10), it won’t be such a hard task for the Huracan.
