March 21, 2016 – Michel Fabre is a 61-year-old grandfather who returned to rallying this year after 27 years away from the sport.
Fabre competes in the WRC 3 category of the World Rally Championship, and believe it or not, leads the standings with a healthy 29-point gap to runner-up Ole Christian Veiby, who’s 42 years younger at 19.
The Frenchman scored eight points in Rally Monte Carlo and secured two victories in Rally Mexico and Rally Sweden, driving a Citroen DS3 R3T. He now aims to keep his lead and plans to take part in Rally Argentina next month.
Fabre drove in more than 60 rallies and hillclimbs in the 1970s and 1980s. He made his WRC debut at the 1986 Tour de Corse and won his class at the same event three years later.
