Being quickest doesn’t necessarily mean being the most popular, and you’ll notice that most spectators in rally events cheer for the driver who puts on the nicest show. In other words, drifting.
Take this BMW E30 driver for example, he’s definitely not the quickest man in France’s Rallye Vaison la Romaine, but you can hear the loud cheers when he passes by the crowds in sideways fashion.
