January 31, 2017 – After being the world’s best-selling automaker for the past 4 years, Toyota lost the top spot in 2016 to its German rival Volkswagen Group despite the emissions scandal that affected the latter.
Volkswagen became the world’s best-selling automaker for the first time ever after it sold 10.31 million vehicles – a 3.8% increase compared to 2015. Meanwhile, Toyota dropped to second place by selling 10.175 million vehicles, which is a 0.2% increase over 2015.
USA’s General Motors are yet to release their sales figures, but they are expected to lag behind the German and Japanese giants. GM was the world’s third-largest carmaker in 2015.
