According to French Rallying website planetmarcus.com, Toyota Motorsport is studying the prospects of a return to the World Rally Championship by the year 2016.
The Japanese automaker, whose Motorsport division is based in Cologne – Germany, will use the Yaris rally car as a test bed for their rumored project, with ex-Formula 1 and current sportscar driver Stephane Sarrazin in charge of the development program.
Toyota last contested a WRC season in 1999 when it won the World Manufacturers’ Championship, while its drivers Didier Auriol and Carlos Sainz finished third and fifth respectively in the drivers’ championship.
