Toyota Woven City: A Futuristic Mobility Hub Welcomes Residents

Toyota’s Woven City, a next-gen tech town, is set to welcome its first residents. A hub for innovation, sustainability, and cutting-edge mobility.

Toyota’s Woven City: Pioneering the Future of Mobility

Toyota’s ambitious vision for the future is taking shape with the launch of Woven City, an innovative community designed to redefine how we live, work, and move. The first phase of this futuristic city, situated on the site of a former auto plant near Mount Fuji in Japan, is now complete, and the first 100 residents are set to move in this fall.

First introduced at the 2020 CES (Consumer Electronics Show), Woven City represents Toyota’s effort to go beyond cars, hybrids, and EVs, positioning itself as a true mobility company. Unlike traditional cities, Woven City will be a hub for inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers who will test new products and technologies to enhance everyday life. This testbed for mobility will feature pedestrian-friendly promenades, electric autonomous vehicles, and low-speed personal mobility devices, all integrated into a sustainable, harmonious urban grid.

Toyota’s Transition to a Mobility Company

Toyota’s shift from being a conventional car manufacturer to a broader mobility company has been in the works since 2018. Woven City is central to this transformation, showcasing the company’s commitment to advancing mobility not just through vehicles but across all aspects of life. The city’s design incorporates the movement of people, goods, energy, and information—aligning with Toyota’s vision of improving the quality of life and sustainability for society at large.

The Woven City project, developed in collaboration with Woven by Toyota (WbyT), also symbolizes Toyota’s drive to innovate beyond automotive technology. The company’s new mobility focus includes ventures in space exploration and rocket production, aiming to redefine transportation across all domains—land, sea, air, and beyond.

Woven City: A Hub for Innovation and Sustainable Living

Located in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Woven City aims to be a model of innovation and environmental consciousness. The city’s first buildings were completed in October, marking a significant milestone in the project’s timeline. By next year, Toyota will welcome an initial group of residents, primarily employees and their families, who will begin testing the city’s infrastructure and technologies.

The residents of Woven City will fall into two categories: inventors and weavers. Inventors are entrepreneurs, startups, and companies like Toyota and WbyT that are focused on creating and refining products and services to improve daily life. These inventions span various sectors, from food and beverage to technology, and aim to create a healthier, more connected community. Weavers, the second type of resident, play an equally important role. These individuals—who will include Toyota staff, their families, and future partners—will actively engage in shaping the city’s growth through feedback and participation in the city’s daily activities.

Looking Ahead: A Vibrant and Expanding Community

The Woven City project is expected to expand in phases. The first phase will accommodate about 360 residents, with plans to grow to approximately 2,000 by 2026. Eventually, Toyota envisions opening the city to the public, allowing outside startups, research institutions, and universities to collaborate in this cutting-edge environment. As the city grows, so too will its role as a global testbed for future mobility solutions.

By blending technology, sustainability, and community, Toyota’s Woven City is on track to become a model for future urban living—one that brings together the brightest minds to create a better, more connected world.
