Volkswagen is marking the 50th anniversary of its iconic Polo by applying the classic Harlequin livery to the Polo R WRX, a championship-winning supermini. This special edition celebrates the car’s history, referencing a quirky marketing stunt from the 1990s.
First introduced on the Mk3 Polo in 1995, the Harlequin look showcased the car’s modularity. The idea was simple: if a door panel was lost or damaged, it could be replaced with a colorful panel, adding a playful touch to the vehicle’s design. Volkswagen built 1,000 Harlequin Polos after the public showed interest, and the livery has since appeared on several other models, including the Mk3 Golf.
At the Bicester Scramble event, Volkswagen revealed the Polo R WRX in Harlequin colors, featuring ‘Changall Blue,’ ‘Flash Red,’ ‘Ginster Yellow,’ and ‘Pistachio.’ The rally car will also sport this livery during future events, showing off its rally-ready capabilities on gravel.
This special edition Polo WRX is a fun, bold tribute to the car’s history and brings a sense of playfulness to the world of performance vehicles. Wouldn’t it be great to see more fun special editions like this in the future?
