The first-generation Golf is regarded by many enthusiasts as one the best cars to have ever come out from Volkswagen’s factories, and one of the first widely successful front-wheel drive hatchbacks; proof of that are the 35 years of continuous production in South African markets, starting in 1974 and ending in 2009. The Golf, and most importantly, its sporty GTI variant has been used in many Motorsport activities, and is still being run to this day thanks to its lightness and simple architecture.
