Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah has put himself in a great position to clinch the 2014 WRC2 title after winning the penultimate round of the WRC season in Spain.
The nine-time Middle East Rally Champion scored his fourth win of the season in a Ford Fiesta RRC after fending off pressure from Frenchman Julien Maurin during the last two days of the event. Al-Attiyah built a two-minute lead on the gravel stages, and despite Maurin’s efforts to close the gap once the rally switched to asphalt, Al-Attiyah controlled his pace to win by 35.0sec.
The destiny of the title will be decided in next month’s final round at Wales Rally GB with Al-Attiyah taking a 20-point lead over Jari Ketomaa into the gravel event.
