Watch: Slate Auto Unveils Affordable Electric Truck Under $20K

Slate Auto, a stealthy new automaker based in Troy, Michigan, has officially introduced its first vehicle: a no-frills electric pickup truck priced below $20,000 after federal tax incentives. With zero gimmicks and a DIY ethos, this compact EV is designed for budget-conscious drivers who need simple, functional transportation.

The truck features a rear-wheel-drive layout powered by a single electric motor, delivering 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. A standard 52.7 kWh battery provides an estimated 150 miles of range, while an optional 84.3 kWh pack extends it to 240 miles. Acceleration is modest, with a claimed 0–60 mph time of 8 seconds and a top speed of 90 mph.

Inside, Slate keeps things minimalist—manual windows, basic HVAC, and no built-in infotainment system. Instead, drivers can mount their own devices. Still, the truck includes critical safety tech like eight airbags, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

An optional SUV conversion kit allows the truck to transform into a five-seater, and Slate promises extensive personalization with hundreds of accessories and wrap options. The vehicle is targeted at drivers who value utility and simplicity over luxury or high performance.

Interestingly, Slate Auto is quietly linked to Amazon via Jeff Bezos, with veteran auto executive Chris Barman(formerly of Chrysler) leading the company.

Unlike many hyped EV startups, Slate’s pitch is grounded and realistic: a low-cost electric vehicle built for everyday use. And with production already underway, this truck might actually deliver on its promise.
