The 1,526-hp Xiaomi SU7 Ultra EV prototype sets a blistering Nürburgring lap, becoming the fastest four-door electric car yet. Here’s why it’s a game changer.
A powerful new electric vehicle from China, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, has just set a Nürburgring lap record for four-door cars. Clocking in at 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds, this high-performance EV not only outpaced all four-door contenders but also became the fastest electric car to date. However, there’s a catch: the record was set using a prototype, heavily stripped down for maximum performance.
The existing lap times by other electric cars, such as the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds and the Rimac Nevera’s 7 minutes and 5.298 seconds, still officially stand, given the SU7 Ultra’s prototype status. Nonetheless, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra’s achievement is a significant statement in the EV world.
The SU7 Ultra features a cutting-edge triple-motor setup Xiaomi refers to as the “HyperEngine V8s,” capable of revving up to an impressive 27,200 rpm. The electric motors collectively produce a staggering 1,526 horsepower, powered by a high-capacity battery designed for endurance. Xiaomi claims the car can handle two consecutive full-speed laps of the Nürburgring without needing a break.
This remarkable performance didn’t come easy; Xiaomi engineers spent six weeks covering over 3,000 kilometers to fine-tune acceleration, braking, cornering, and suspension specifically for the Nürburgring. The team plans to launch a production version in 2025, with prices starting at 814,900 yuan (just under £90,000).
The car’s aerodynamic design, crafted for maximum efficiency, generates 285 kg of downforce—comparable to that of a supercar. Carbon fiber components keep the weight down, and the performance specs are eye-popping: 0 to 62 mph in 1.98 seconds (with a one-foot rollout), 0 to 124 mph in just 5.86 seconds, and a top speed of 217 mph.
Equipped with massive brakes, dual-chamber air springs, and options for advanced suspension systems like Bilstein coilovers, the SU7 Ultra is no joke. As this electric powerhouse gears up for production, it’s clear that competitors like Porsche, Tesla, and Rimac will need to take note. The electric vehicle landscape just got a lot more intense.
