2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Gets New Automatic Transmission

Hyundai will replace the dual-clutch transmission in the 2026 Santa Fe with a more conventional eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The update affects non-hybrid models equipped with the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

A Hyundai spokesperson confirmed the change, citing improved drivability as the main reason for the switch. The decision follows a major recall of the 2024 Santa Fe, where over 12,000 vehicles were affected by a serious transmission defect. In those cases, regular driving could trigger a failure that required full transmission replacement.

The problematic eight-speed dual-clutch unit will no longer be used in the Santa Fe moving forward. Hyundai’s move aims to improve long-term reliability and enhance daily driving comfort. Despite sharing the same transmission, Kia has stated it will not make the same change for its Sorento model in 2026.

The Santa Fe Hybrid remains unaffected by this update. It will continue to use its existing powertrain, which includes a six-speed automatic transmission, along with minor changes to trim and interior options.

This transmission update marks a significant shift in Hyundai’s approach to improving reliability and user satisfaction in its mid-size SUV lineup, aiming to address past issues and provide a more refined driving experience for future buyers.
