March 11, 2016 – The Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R are both magnificent hot hatches that deliver outstanding performance, but in every comparison, there can only be one winner.

Volkswagen’s range-topping Golf R delivers 296 horsepower and of 379 Nm torque from its turbocharged four-cylinder, while a similar engine in the Civic Type R generates 306 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque.

However, the VW benefits from all-wheel drive and a very quick dual-clutch transmission, while the Honda is pushed by its front wheels, features a manual transmission and is 100 kilograms lighter than its German rival.

Will the VW’s extra grip and quick transmission help it win this race or can the lighter and more powerful FWD Honda prevail? Find out in the Top Gear video below.
