Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) division is reviving the iconic 4A-GE engine for classic AE86 Corolla enthusiasts with newly designed cylinder blocks and heads. While these new parts aren’t exact replicas, they improve on the original in key areas, benefiting from 40 years of performance insights.
Restoring classic cars is often challenging due to the difficulty of finding original parts. With the pandemic’s onset, Toyota GR began producing reproduction components for popular models, including the Land Cruiser series, 2000GT, and the AE86. Now, they are offering new cylinder blocks and heads for the 4A-GE 1.6-liter engine.
The updated cylinder heads feature thicker walls in the intake and exhaust ports, along with better machining for smoother surfaces and more consistent flow. The cylinder block benefits from more durable cast iron and improved honing techniques. It also includes a new crankshaft structure and is designed to fit both rear- and transverse-engine configurations.
Toyota will showcase a restored AE86 with these new parts at Fuji Speedway in Japan, where customers can pre-order them. The parts are expected to be available in May 2026, and Toyota GR invites enthusiasts to submit part requests for future reproductions.
